Un argomento portato spesso contro la legalizzazione del mercato della cannabis è che una politica di questo tipo aumenterebbe il crimine.
Analizzando i recenti processi di legalizzazione avviati dagli stati USA di Washington (fine del 2012) e Oregon (fine del 2014) i ricercatori dell’Alma Mater bolognese Davide Dragone, Giovanni Prarolo, Paolo Vanin e Giulio Zanella, hanno confrontato le differenze statistiche dei reati nei due stati confinanti prima e dopo la legalizzazione dello stato di Washington.
La conclusione è che la regolamentazione legale della cannabis ricreativa ha causato nel 2013-2014 una significativa riduzione di stupri e furti in particolare nel lato del confine dello stato di Washington rispetto al lato dello Stato dell’Oregon e rispetto agli anni pre-legalizzazione 2010-2012.
